Project Officers are currently collecting the microscopic seeds of many threatened orchid species in the south west, including Mellblom's Spider-orchid (Caladenia hastata), Diuris behrii, Caladenia filamentosa, Limestone Spider-orchid and Candy Spider-orchid (Caladenia versicolor). This seed collection contributes to the Millenium Seedbank Project and is also used to propagate new plants for reintroduction into the wild. Research is also being undertaken to identify the pollinator of Mellblom's Spider-orchid, which involves using fresh flowers as bait in areas of potential habitat to lure in and capture the insects for identification. It is thought that the pollinator is a male thynnid wasp (also known as a flower wasp), which regularly visit and pollinate spider-orchids believing them to be receptive female wasps. The orchids mimic both the scent and appearance of the flightless female wasp to attract pollination. News item contributed by Kate Vlcek D.S.E. Warrnambool. (Photos to accompany this news item)
